IPTV With Kodi, Plex & Jellyfin
Everything you need to know about IPTV — how it works, what's legal, and how it compares with cable, satellite and Netflix.
If you already run a media server (Plex, Jellyfin, or a Kodi HTPC), you can add live TV and catch-up channels via IPTV, turning your existing UI into one unified hub for live TV, movies, sport — all on the same screen.
Kodi
- Install Kodi on your device (Windows, macOS, Linux, or Android).
- Settings → Add-ons → Add-on Browser → Install from repository.
- Install PVR IPTV Simple Client.
- Configure: General tab → Remote M3U playlist → paste your Vivo IPTV M3U URL. Channels appear under Live TV.
- Use a separate EPG add-on (XMLTV) or the PVR client’s EPG settings to set the program guide.
Plex (Live TV & DVR)
- Plex supports Live TV & DVR, not natively for third-party M3U in all regions.
- Some users run an intermediary (xTeVe or TellyTV) to convert an M3U/Xtream Codes subscription into something Plex can ingest.
- Once ingested, channels appear in the Live TV section; recording requires a Plex Pass subscription.
Jellyfin
- Jellyfin is open source and has native M3U tuner support via Live TV & DVR → Tuners.
- Add your M3U URL directly; it fetches channels on its own.
- Combine with EPG sources for the program guide and recordings (TVHeadend-style DVR possible).
Trade-offs
- Slower channel change times than native IPTV apps.
- EPG mapping is manual — tough for many-channel lists.
- Recording surfaces require careful storage planning.
- Plex adds monthly cost in self-hosted setups.
When to Stick With a Native App
For a pure TV experience, native apps like TiviMate, IPTV Smarters or IBO Player give snappier channel switching and auto-managed EPG. Choose Kodi/Plex/Jellyfin when you want live TV next to your existing libraries.
Does Kodi require Xtream Codes or M3U?
Either works. M3U is the most common way to populate PVR IPTV Simple Client, though Xtream Codes could need an XML-generator bridge.
Can Plex record live TV from IPTV?
Yes with Plex Pass, but only once channels are mapped in via an intermediary (e.g., xTeVe). Most users skip this and rely on the provider’s catch-up.
Is Jellyfin better than Plex for IPTV?
Jellyfin’s native M3U support makes setup easier for many users; Plex has a more polished UI. It depends on your existing hardware.
