When you sign up you normally get an email with either a very long http:// address, or four short pieces of information: a server, a username, a password, and a port. Almost nobody explains what the difference is or why one works better.
These are the two ways an IPTV player can talk to your provider. Here they are side by side.
What an M3U Playlist Is
An M3U playlist is a plain text list of channel addresses. It looks something like this, simplified:

Your player downloads that list, then plays each address. It is simple, portable — any app can read it — and it is what older tutorials assume you have.
What the Xtream Codes API Is
Xtream Codes is a different protocol. Instead of a list of addresses, your app logs in to a server and asks for the channel list, the programme guide, and account status. Nothing is downloaded as a static file.
That difference is the important part. A live request means the provider can send a much smaller, smarter reply rather than a file containing every address in advance.

Which Should You Choose?
Use Xtream Codes if your app supports it. It is the better experience in almost every measurable way — faster channel changes, a working programme guide, and no large list to download every time the app opens.
Use the M3U playlist if the app you want only supports playlists. Some older and less common players are playlist-only. Compatibility wins over elegance in that case.
Ask your provider for both if you can. It takes them seconds to generate and saves a support conversation later.
How to Enter Each One
For Xtream Codes, your app will show four fields. Fill them in exactly as supplied — the most common mistake is adding spaces or trailing slashes:
- Server / Host: the domain or IP only, no
http:// - Username: exactly as given
- Password: exactly as given, and check for capital letters
- Port: the number, with no colon
For an M3U playlist, your app usually asks for a single URL. Paste the whole thing, including the http:// at the start. It looks unwieldy but it is one unbroken address — if your app seems to cut it off, something truncated the paste.
Three Things That Go Wrong
- Copy-paste corruption. A missing character in a username produces "invalid credentials" with no useful detail. Type it manually once and save it in the app.
- The
http://trap. Some apps insist you enter the server without the protocol. If login fails, try both forms. - Using a playlist URL as a server address. They are different things. If you paste a playlist link into the server field, nothing sensible will happen.
Which Player App Should I Use?

Whichever app you pick, install it and sign in before you start judging your picture quality. A badly configured player looks like a bad stream, and you will end up blaming the wrong thing.
